EXISTENCE : An International Feminist Art
2018 Exhibition Changsha China
Denise Keele-bedford is participating in Existence with her artwork ‘See me: Hear my Silent Screams’.
Artist statement on Feminism:
I have always thought of feminism as an ideal for equality of the sexes. It had never occurred to me, and history shows, that some have been more equal than others. In its conception Feminism meant equality for ‘white middle class privileged females’.
This is not my view and from recent research have embraced the term ‘Intersectional Feminism’. A woman is a woman no matter race, colour, culture, class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or physical appearance.
Whatever equality means for any woman in the world then Intersectional Feminism is the
Ideal.
My work for Existence reflects on the discrimination, oppression and abuse of comfort women; women who are victims of war through inequality.
See me: Hear my Silent Screams is a symbol of the trauma experienced by comfort women. Yet, it is a symbol of women’s strength to endure, survive, support each other and build power to have their voices heard.
