71: Smoke and Dust – December “19”
Highly Commended
Smoke and Dust – December ’19 – Depicting the smoke filed atmosphere from bushfires last December 2019 along the Hume Highway. The sky was yellow red and the countryside grey.
Judge’s Comment:
In this case tone does all the work and the artist uses a reduced colour palette. The dimensions of the painting measure up into fifths horizontally and create the balance for the painting to work. There is a sense of calm, mood, atmosphere and mystery. A minimalist painting with sufficient punch to compel the viewer to look more closely at ‘ what isn’t there’. A nice piece of minimalist, realist, romantic art. ‘What isn’t there’ is as important as what is.
