The pandemic has given me time to develop the skills I learnt while studying for my Bachelor of Fine Arts three to four years ago. As well as ceramics, I tried a bit of gold and silver smithing. Enamelling on copper was the norm at university as it is cheapest alternative for beginners. With graduation behind me, it is exciting to experiment with enamelling on precious metals. I chose bright opaque colours for these trinkets and although there are many hours involved in sawing, attaching cloisonne wires and multiple firings, I am happy with the results. Joining the trinkets into a necklace with colourful beads means I can enjoy wearing my first foray into enamelling on silver. I find the precision work involved in gold and silver smithing and jewellery making challenging so I’m looking forward to lots more experimentation.
