Reflections on the passage of time in a French cafe

Time is an ephemeral mystery.

The mirror is a portal from the present to the past – where our reflection over the years reveals someone different to the intrinsic person inside.

When I saw this scene inside a French café near Saigon I was immediately intrigued and had to paint it. The old man at rest underneath a beautiful antique French mirror is juxtaposed against the ephemeral image of a young man working outside.
