This is Uncle Jack Charles, Aboriginal respected elder, activist, actor, raconteur, a Stolen Generation child, abused in care. It was a privilege to be able to paint this man who sat for The Friday Group Victorian Artists Society at the end of 2020. Because this was the last session for the year, I finished the portrait in my studio. He regaled us with many anecdotes about his colourful life, entertaining us whilst we painted.

This work is professionally framed with a black frame which enhances the work dramatically.

Judge’s Comment:
An interesting and expressive rendering of a true legend! The dappled effect of Charles’ skin really captures his pensive expression, and the wonderful hints of blue in his wavy hair and beard give him personality, texture and movement. I particularly like the chiaroscuro background, allowing the limelight to be deservedly on his face.
