Ev Hales
Artist Statement
The impetus for my images is based in everyday activities and part of daily life – the aspects that capture life today. This will place my work in my era.
I live surrounded by bush but very close to urban life. This means I am part of both bush and city worlds. The natural rhythm of the bush and its wild life is a complete contrast to the dynamic design and frenetic energy of city life. Both feature in my work.
Pattern is the underlying basis for what I paint. In nature the patterns can be subtle and informal as opposed to the dynamic geometry of the city. I love both and react to them quite differently.
I work mainly in watercolour but come from a printmaking and onglaze painting background. This provides me with multiple skills and I use them all.
Teaching has been an important part of my life and I value the people I have met and how they shared their artistic journey with me as their tutor / mentor.
