Who are we?

Founded in 1902, our purpose is to support and promote the artistic achievements of our members through exhibitions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

We provide a vibrant community where members can showcase their work, participate in events, and access valuable resources to advance their careers. By celebrating and elevating the contributions of women in the arts, we continue to inspire and empower generations of artists.

Our history

The Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors (MSWPS) was established in March 1902 by former students of the National Gallery of Victoria Art School to support the development of Melbourne women artists and foster lasting friendships. Over the years, we have welcomed a diverse group of women artists, including painters, sculptors, printmakers, craft workers, commercial artists, and designers.

One of our most notable members, Ola Cohn, was a prominent Australian sculptor who served as MSWPS President for many years. She granted MSWPS permanent weekly access to her home in East Melbourne, which is now administered by the Council for Adult Education. This historic venue hosts our monthly meetings and weekly figure drawing sessions.

Our rich history is detailed in "More Than Just Gumtrees," a book by Dr. Juliette Peers, which chronicles our members' achievements from 1902 to 1993. The book explores various issues, including workplace, family and art commitments, economic survival, migrant artists, and prejudice against women.
