42days 42boats 42installations - Beatrice Magalotti

On a cold, wet, and windy night, several MSWPS Members gathered at Ladder Art Space for the opening of Beatrice Magalotti’s exhibition.

Forty-two stark white, pristine porcelain boats seemed oblivious to the weather, appearing buoyant as they drifted across white-painted plinths in a white gallery environment. The black-and-white in situ photographs complemented the series of installations throughout the space.

An insightful catalogue accompanies the show, detailing the 42 installations from across the globe.

Beatrice states:

"In response to Melbourne’s Stage 4 lockdown, I made 42 ceramic boats—one for each day of the lockdown, with their stitched seams representing fragility, mending, and patching lives. The boats were then photographed by myself and by Australian and overseas collaborators. The boats could travel even when I could not. I have compiled a number of the images into the 42days 42boats 42installations book and have physically exhibited the ceramic boats, book, and photographs together."
