30th April 2018 Letter received from Dianne Reilly – Hon Secretary La Trobe Society
Now that the last works of art have been collected from La Trobe’s Cottage, I would like to thank you for organising this successful and delightful exhibition in the Servants’ Quarters, and for speaking to those present at the annual La Trobe’s Birthday celebration on 18 March.
The talented members of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors are to be congratulated on the quality of their works which were greatly appreciated by the many visitors to the Cottage, and it was something quite out of the ordinary to have an art exhibition in the ambience of this historic home. La Trobe – as you know, a talented artist himself – would have enjoyed viewing so many artistic representations of his simple abode.
With thanks to you all,
Dianne

Reply from Jo Reitze On behalf of MSWPS
Dear Dianne,
Thank you for your kind words. It was a great pleasure for members of Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors to have the opportunity to spend several occasions sketching La Trobe’s Cottage and its pretty, shady garden. It was appropriate that our sketches could depict the cottage and its current surrounds as it referenced the heritage of La Trobe who sketched his home so many years before. It is not often that artists have a chance to show our smaller works. All involved were delighted with the exhibition in the Servants’ Quarters and the resultant sale of a third of the works. Thanks to you and Sandi Pullman for initiating this project. Hopefully we may be able to collaborate again in the future.
MSWPS Archivist, Robyn Pridham forwarded her photographs of our exhibition to Helen Armstrong for the C J La Trobe Society.
Thanks to all your members who assisted us throughout the show.
