Artist Statement:

On the Eastern shore of the Tasmanian Great Lakes (Yingina) is the Central Plateau Conservation Area, more specifically sub alpine moorland. Here, its 1000m above sea level and it’s known as one of the coldest places in Tasmania. This climate directs the growth habit of the region and the stunted colour leached flora.

This land stands proud. It has not been ravaged by the intrusion of invasive species. It is solid in its pure form. The trees with their long, extended branches and twisted gnarls evidence the struggle for survival and mirror the human condition. Colour stripped greys whisper longitudinal stories of strength and knowledge and the heathland magically produces tiny gleaming flowers regardless. The detritus of natural forest floor is a pivotal habitat for the essential fauna and insects of this well-established ecosystem. The lifecycle of natural existence is precious here.

The wintery light instructs the greys. They are collectively luminous across their multiplicity and enhanced by a chroma of every nuance. Australian Greys sing across this landscape and this work is about celebrating their existence, their voice, in order to weave that unforgettable and subtle refrain.
