Margaret Picken

PROFILE
1968-75 –Studied Cartography at RMIT and worked as a Geological Draftsman within the mining industry producing maps for reports etc. This career involving hand drawing of the maps does not exist anymore due to the introduction of the Cad system, computers etc.
1983 –2005 –I had my own business working as a commercial artist for Real Estate in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and outskirts. I produced pen and ink property sketches, site plans and floor plans for use in brochures, newspapers and other advertising. This career also disappeared with the advent of color photo advertising and multimedia companies who took over the entire advertising needs of the industry.
Upon retiring I studied Calligraphy under Janine Mitchell for 2 years and was fortunate to win First prize, Royal Melbourne Show 2005 –‘Craft Calligraphy and Lettering Arts –Novice Section. Janine retired from teaching,so I took classes with Stephen Doyle –Oil painting at the VAS and joined a class at Balwyn Community Centre to start painting in 2012.
Subsequent classes at VAS were with Linda Weil 2015-16, for drawing etc and then on to Julian Bruere for 3 years with drawing and watercolour.
Since 2019 I have been painting with the Hawthorn Artist Society in their Friday morning basement group. Jenny Scholes is our mentor along with Nathan Paramanathan.
I paint for my own enjoyment, usually from photographic images that appeal to me. My husband enjoys photography so many of those images may come from his camera. The Kimberley and Pilbara regions and general coastal scenery are favourites. I also enjoy doing portraits in pencil, ‘fine liner’ drawings and am keen to try some abstract painting in the future.
