‘Stones of the Yarra Valley’ 2020

This work won first prize at their competition early this year. We were required to paint something relating to their property in Coldstream. My scene was sketched and painted in early November, on a cool, cloudy morning, with soft, filtered light, when new leaf buds were appearing. My aim was to capture the Italianate quality of the scene, in both the buildings and the soft quality of light, which was achieved after laboriously painting many thin layers of colour which were each scratched back to reveal what went before.
